There are many things that I like about Fall, but I think the best part is changing over from our summer supper menu to our wintry menu!! I really love to cook and try new recipes. This year I have seen so many new recipes for soups and stews!! Can't wait to get cooking and now since the weather has started to turn colder it is time.
I started our fall cooking festivities with the cooking of our pumpkin seeds after we carved our pumpkins for Halloween. I usually just pull off most of the chunks and cook them in the oven with some butter and salt, but this year I was looking for other pumpkin recipes and found that there is another step. There was a thread that suggested boiling the seeds in some salted water for about 10 minutes before toasting in the oven which would allow the salty flavor to infuse into the seed some. I tried this with our seeds this year and was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. The rest of the family thought they were excellent too and they were not around long! So here's to starting off a fall of new culinary adventures.....I think we should have roasted chicken tonight!
Well, I am just going to ignore that I have not posted since June. I think I may have even been abducted by aliens at some point and taken to a different galaxy which would explain my lack of knowledge about how much time has passed. Although I only know of a few people who would actually let me get away with that kid of story.
My main issue happened to be my birthday this year. I have never had much trouble with getting older it never seemed to really matter that much and a lot of times I have to think about how old Iam when people ask. This year was different and hit me pretty hard. I think that I had a lot of expectations of where I was going to be at that point and of course things were not as I had planned.
We are now preparing to get everything ready for an additional family member to arrive in April. It is turning out to be a bigger job than we thought. I guess the first one was easy to get ready for because he was all we had to focus on, but this second one we keep randomly remembering things that you will need and having those "Doh" moments about once a day. I will post some pictures as we get things going and keep up with posting as best I can!
I wish I had a before picture of our old mailbox, but alas A got a little project bug on Saturday when C and I were gone for the day and we came home to a new mailbox and the old one was no where to be found. The old box wasn't horrible it just wasn't that great either. Some of you may know about my fear of sewers and sewer type grates in the walkway. For those of you that don't I have this fear of these things totally exasperated by the Stephen King franchise, mainly "It", and the corresponding movies. I have this unexplainable fear of myself or C falling into the sewer, my handbag falling open and loosing my keys wallet phone etc, or something actually reaching out and grabbing me!! So my wish since we moved in was to move the mailbox to the other side of the driveway!
We went on Sunday then and picked out some perrenials to go around it for a little landscaping and some house numbers. We are just getting around to really doing some planting around the house and designing some beds. We have lots of ideas, but not so much luck on the funds so it is a long process to get everything finished. On our old house we worked really hard and got a lot of things out of our Mom's yards since they had a lot of established plants that kept needing to be split. Hopefully when we start making some decisions on what we think we want to do we can "share" plants some more! Here's a few pictures of our old place.
I really like being in the house by myself for long periods of time, but I really wish I wasn't sick!! I'd rather be at work than stuck in the house doing nothing when there is so much to do. I have requested that another day be added to my week just for me, but so far it hasn't come through. Something about the whole time space continuim that it can't be allowed - whatever.
I have been able to catch up on my DVR playlist of shows, although if I keep falling asleep I may have to re-watch a couple and there I am running out of time again. Oh well - heres looking forward to tomorrow.
Happy Mother's day to all of you who are a mother to something be it a child, a pet, a younger sibling or a life partner of any kind! I have to say there are days when i long to have a place to hide all by myself, but ultimately I really love to be needed and am a total pleaser so I wouldn't be able to stay by myself for very long. We spent Saturday making terrariums for the Grandma's since I saw the idea here on angry chicken. I love the idea and thought this is perfect!! Both of our mom's love gardening and plants and having something made by there grandson would be even better. Well I had to make one for me to, but I do say they didn't turn out quite like the picture in my head, but I think they will be loved no matter what. Hope you had a great day doing whatever your heart's desire!
So I talked to my brother in California today and i admitted that I had turned into our Mom. I had gotten back from Garage sales and had what I thought to be some pretty nifty finds! His response was that I had turned into Mom a long time ago and now I had officially crossed over to the dark side! Well, if it takes selling my soul to the devil or hangin' with Darth Vader to get cool stuff for almost nothing than where do I sign! I found a little something for everyone: a telescope, a tackle box, some cookbooks, and some toys all for $20.00!
I only say I have turned into my mother since I can remember spending pretty much every spring until fall Saturday morning getting up really early to go to garage sales. At the time I thought it was pretty much torture especially if there wasn't anything for me to get. We tease her that she is getting out of hand, but she's not. She does like a bargain and is forever hanging on to stuff - "just in case someone could use it", but then again we wouldn't want to loose the "majic basement". So accepting that I am my mother I will be off again next Saturday looking for the next deal. Nothing beats the early morning quiet, a venti vanilla latte and a bag of change to unwind from a long week.
Keeping up in St. Louis, MO.
